TY Bryngwyn Hospice in Llanelli has announced that a £683k major refurbishment project to develop state of the art facilities for the centre has commenced.
Phase 1 of the project will be funded by Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, thanks to donations from patients, families and the generous public in the local community. This phase will see major improvements to the main entrance, reception and day services area along with the addition of a designated group/therapy room and outreach clinics linking to offsite clinicians.
Phase 2 is funded by the Ty Bryngwyn Hospice Committee and will include improvements to the six bedded in patient unit which will be fully refurbished along with the development of a new seventh bedroom with en-suite facilities and the ability to support families during the stay.
During the planning of this essential work, patients, staff, families, trustees and the general public have all had an input to ensure this environment will meet the needs for the future.
Rhian Dawson, Project Director for Ty Bryngwyn said: “There will be no disruption to services during the refurbishment works. The in-patient beds and staff have been temporarily relocated to the new Mynydd Mawr ward based in Prince Philip Hospital. Day care services will continue to be provided at Ty Cymorth Specialist Palliative Care Unit based in the grounds of Glangwili General Hospital. An outreach service will continue to be operational within the Llanelli locality.”
Chair of the Board of Trustees of Ty Bryngwyn, Dr Ray Majer, commented: “I am absolutely delighted that the works have now commenced. The building and facilities are now over twenty years old and are in need of modernisation.
“These improvements are essential to ensure that patients have access to a positive patient and family environment in which to receive the care, treatment and support they require. We owe so much to hard work and dedication of everyone who has been involved with the hospice over the years and to a generous public for their continuing support.”
Bernardine Rees OBE, Chair of Hywel Dda University Health Board, concluded: “There has been so much positive interest in this project. We have seen patients, staff and families all working in partnership together to help re-design the centre and their contribution is hugely appreciated.
“I thank everyone from the local community who has supported the hospice over the years and for those who have made today and the start of the refurbishment journey happen. The works are scheduled to be completed on the 2nd November when we look forward to warmly welcoming patients back to Ty Bryngwyn.”
