THE British Geological Survey have confirmed that Wales and the West Country have experienced an Earthquake measuring 4.4 ML at a depth 7.4km today, Saturday (Feb 17) at around 14:31.
The epicentre appears to have been approx 20km NNE of Swansea, LAT/LONG : 51.776° North / 3.837° West GRID REF : 273.3 kmE / 210.2 kmN
One report from Gwaun Cae Gerwen (15km NW of the epicentre) said: “was sat on couch and heard a rumble faint then building louder like thunder and as it got loudest within a matter of seconds the couches moved up and down and back and forth as the ripple shock wave hit ,and the whole house seemed to tilt rise and fall from one side to the other, my couches are extremely heavy and large and we were sat on each one at the time.”
People took to social media across Wales to report what had happened. The British Geological Survey were quick to take to social media to report the incident. #earthquake was also trending on Twitter.
Dyfed-Powys Police reported receiving a high level of calls reporting Earth tremors.
Experts state that on average the UK typically experiences one similar-sized earthquake every 2 to 8 years.
The British Geological Survey state that this is the ‘biggest event in the area’ since the 5.2 magnitude earthquake in 1906. Coincidentally a large number of quakes have occurred within a 100km square of this epicentre at Cwmllynfell.
