Town Council welcomes Tour of Britain to Carmarthenshire

THE Mayor of Llanelli, Cllr David Darkin and Llanelli Town Council Leader, Cllr Shahana Najmi have on behalf of the Town Council welcomed the announcement that the Tour of Britain will be visiting the area for the Grand Depart on Sunday (Sep 2).

The Town Council Offices will display a promotional green bike and bunting in support of the event.

The Town Mayor, Cllr Darkin said: “I am delighted to welcome the Tour of Britain to the area, I know that the people of Llanelli are excited about the Grand Depart and I am sure this internationally recognised event will provide for a great boost to the Community.”

Council Leader, Cllr Najmi said: “I am pleased that the Town Council is able to promote this exciting event by displaying the green bike in support of the Grand Depart on the 2nd September.”

It was announced last week that the winner of the 2018 Tour de France, Welshman Geraint Thomas, will take part in the race and will lead team Sky in the UK’s biggest road race.

Carmarthenshire has been chosen to host the Grand Depart of the prestigious race, which will start at Pembrey Country Park and travel north through the county towards Llandovery.

Local people and visitors to Carmarthenshire will be the first to see the winner in action in a professional road race since he became the first Welshman ever to win the Tour de France.

Thousands of spectators will line the route, many travelling from outside Carmarthenshire.
