Swansea Aquatics Swimmers ‘young guns’ dominate

THE swimmers of Swansea Aquatics took part in the West Wales Junior Development Meet in Carmarthen Leisure Centre on Sunday (June 17).

Swimmers aged from 9-12 years-old took part in the junior meet race against opposition swimmers from around the region.

Swimmers would undertake five events to add up a final time score. Some of the races included the 100m Individual Medley (I.M.), 50m Breastroke, 50m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly and 200m Freestyle.

The meet ran on a Pentathlon system where all the individual events added up for a final time. Swimmers with the lowest time combined were the winners.

Sam Jones of the Swansea Aquatics said: “This type of competition [pentathlon] is fantastic to encourage younger swimmers to engage and take part in all events. As a country we are looking to build young people to be good all round swimmers on all four strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breastroke and Freestyle). This means that when swimmers reach 17/18 years old swimmers can start specialising events and strokes with a good backstroke of work on medley strokes.”

Jones went on to explain Swansea Aquatics programme which boosts Gold Coast Commonwealth Medallist Daniel Jervis and Alys Thomas, Swansea programme is a I.M. based programme to cater every swimmers needs and reach their potential in the pool.

Jones was thrilled with the talent coming through the ranks racing in Carmarthen, he said: “ The swimmers where fantastic all day from start to finish and they put in some top performances and proved that there is quality in West Wales. The future is bright for the next generation of talent coming through the club.”
