Statement on establishment of Major Trauma Network for South & West Wales & South Powys

THE NHS Wales Health Collaborative Leadership Forum (made up of Chairs and Chief Executives of the Health Boards and Trusts in Wales) has agreed to recommend to health boards in the region that they approve the establishment of a major trauma network for South and West Wales and South Powys.

The detailed recommendations were generated by an Independent Panel of experts and formed the basis of a 12 week public consultation exercise which ended in February. They state that:

* A major trauma network for the region should be quickly developed
* The adult and children’s major trauma centre should be on the same site
* The major trauma centre should be at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff
* Morriston Hospital should become a large trauma unit and should have a lead role in the major trauma network
* A clear and realistic timetable for putting the trauma network in place should be set

Due consideration has been given to all the views expressed through the consultation process together with the evidence supporting the establishment of a major trauma network for this population.

All views will be taken into consideration by Health Boards in coming to their individual decisions as to whether or not they will support the recommendations made by the Independent panel.

The recommendations will be considered by Health Boards across the region at their Board meetings held in public on 29th March and decisions made.
