WITH outstanding cello soloist Michael Petrov and Principal Conductor Gareth Jones, award winning chamber orchestra Sinfonia Cymru returns to Pontyberem Memorial Hall with its classic blend of virtuosity and excellence.
Principal Conductor Gareth Jones founded Sinfonia Cymru in 1996. Since its early days the orchestra has enjoyed regular visits to Pontyberem Memorial Hall and is always greeted with the warmest of welcomes from the enthusiastic and knowledgeable local audience. For this latest upcoming concert, the orchestra will be playing a programme of music by Haydn, Schubert and Bartok.
Relaxing for the listener, but technically intricate and challenging, Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 in D major is a soothing and lyrical work by a master of string music. Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major is a joyful addition to this elegant programme, which also includes Haydn’s Symphony No. 85 in B-flat major, a favourite of Marie Antoinette’s, and Bartok’s Divertimento for Strings.
Young Classical Artists Trust artist Michael Petrov was nominated by the Barbican as ECHO Rising Star, and has appeared as soloist with the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony and English Chamber Orchestras. He studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he is now a fellow.
“Michael Petrov plays with the bravura and calm assurance of a long-established maestro. At his recent performance of Shostakovich’s 1st Cello Concerto at the Barbican Petrov dominated the orchestra effortlessly.”

Gareth Jones, Principal Conductor:
“This series incorporates concerts in our most frequently visited venues in South Wales, along with only our second visit to Theatr Hafren in Newtown.
For those of you who are frequent attendees at Sinfonia Cymru concerts, you will know that, over the past ten years, we have enjoyed a happy and fruitful partnership with YCAT. Artists such as Alina Ibragimova, Philip Higham, Llyr Williams and Laura van der Heijden are among the distinguished roster of soloists who have thrilled and delighted our audiences. This series sees another YCAT artist share the platform with us – the brilliant Bulgarian-born cellist Michael Petrov. He will play Haydn’s D major Concerto, a real gem of a piece and particularly challenging in technical terms.
Add to that one of the most beautiful of the Paris symphonies, Schubert’s evergreen Fifth Symphony and Bartok’s Divertimento for Strings, with its heavy, punchy dance rhythms and you have a treat of varied styles and tastes.”
