SIMON Thomas AM has resigned from his post as AM for Mid and West Wales after being arrested by police investigating allegations of a serious offence.
Mr Thomas who is employed by Swansea University and is a father of two children was elected in 2011.
Dyfed-Powys Police issued the following statement:
“An individual from Aberystwyth has been arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images. The individual has been released on police bail for 28 days.”
In a statement Plaid Cymru Chair, Alun Ffred Jones said:
“Plaid Cymru has received Simon Thomas’s resignation as a member of the party.
“We are aware of a police investigation into allegations of a serious offence.
“Due to that ongoing investigation it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”
His resignation may see Llanelli’s Helen Mary Jones taking over the position.
The Twitter page for Simon Thomas has been deleted although his Plaid Cymru website is still in use.
