CARMARTHENSHIRE County Council road safety officers have been out talking to motorcyclists as part of an initiative to reduce the number of casualties involved in motorcycle collisions.
The total number of motorcyclist casualties on Welsh roads declined in 2016, when compared to 2015 figures (12 per cent decrease).
There were 61 motorcycle casualties in Carmarthenshire in 2016 accounting for 9.2 per cent of the all Wales figure*.
They joined officers from partner agencies at the Owl’s Nest Tea Rooms in Llandovery on Sunday, April 8, to give information and advice.
Those in attendance included the Institute of Advanced Motorists, RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders, Motorcycle Action Group Cymru, Mid and Wet Wales Fire and Rescue Services, Dyfed Powys Police, GoSafe, Cruse Bereavement Care, Blood Bikes Wales and neighbouring local authorities.
The council encouraged a number of bikers to sign up to their free motorcycle courses Dragon Rider Cymru and Biker Down! Cymru, and gave out dozens of Motorcycle CRASH Cards.
Cllr Hazel Evans, executive board member for environment, said: “The day was a great success with many motorcyclists engaging with us and our partners. Further awareness days will be held throughout the year, as well as other motorcycle events in the county.
“The Council is working with partner agencies to assist with efforts to reduce the number of motorcyclists killed and seriously injured on our roads. It is a priority for the council and partner agencies and much work is underway to educate both motorcycle riders and other drivers in relation to safety and road skills.”
