THE Carmarthenshire Primary Schools Cross Country Championships scheduled for this Thursday afternoon (Sep 20) at the United Counties Showground in Nantyci, Carmarthen has been cancelled due to weather warning and for safety reasons.
Hundreds of schoolchildren from across the county were expected to attend with more than 40 schools in attendance.
The organisers’ statement is as follows:
“Due to the Weather Warnings and the poor forecast on Thursday this week (20th September) as well as on safety reasons, we are disappointed to announce to all (at 13:00 on Tuesday 18th September) that the Carmarthenshire Primary Schools Cross Country Championships at the United Counties Showground in Nantyci, Carmarthen scheduled for Thursday afternoon has been cancelled on the grounds of health and safety of all the athletes, volunteers and spectators.”
The course set-up team of Hedydd Davies, Nathan Jones and Eric Evans were out on the course marking on Tuesday morning (Sep 18) and were happy with the underfoot conditions and the facility in general at the current time. But with what looks like worse to come, it was clear that with a spell of heavy rain leading up to the races, that the ground would deteriorate significantly and would become dangerous for all participating.
Event Organisers have kept a close eye on weather developments over the last 24-48 hours taking everyone’s safety into account, but with warnings now in place at the time of writing, the race referee had very little choice other than to call off the event.
This difficult decision has been made early and as quickly as possible so that the hundreds of competitors, their parents/guardians, schools and volunteers have been made aware of the situation with 48 hours to spare.
Thursday afternoon’s programme expected to see large numbers of over 40 schools compete and over 1,000 children ranging from Year 3 to Year 6 take to the start line in one of the most well-attended sporting events currently held in Dyfed.
It is hoped that the Dyfed Primary Schools Cross Country Championships will attract great numbers in the first few months of next year. Date To Be Confirmed.
