Neil Hamilton calls for youngsters to create designs for cycle jersey

NEIL Hamilton, Leader of UKIP Wales and AM for Mid & West Wales, is calling on youngsters to create a winning design for a cycle jersey.

He is urging schoolchildren, under the age of 16, to come up with an idea as part of Carmarthenshire’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain celebrations.

The winning design will be created into a jersey and presented to all Welsh riders as they kick off the first leg of the race at Pembrey Country Park on Sept 2. The winner will also meet the Welsh riders before they depart.

Mr Hamilton, Party Spokesman for Culture, said he was delighted to see Britain’s biggest professional cycle race visiting his Region for the first time.

He said: “What a great idea to get schoolchildren involved and a wonderful opportunity for young people to get creative and come up with a design, which will be worn by professional Welsh cyclists.

“It is a fantastic chance for people living in the area to be able to watch top riders from the world’s best teams in action. Not to mention putting Carmarthenshire, in the spotlight with daily coverage on national television.

“The closing date is fast approaching so I would urge anyone interested in designing a jersey to get busy drawing.”

The race sees 120 riders from some of the world’s best teams compete, including Olympic and World Champions and Tour de France stage winners.

Riders will leave Pembrey Country Park and then continue throughout the county passing through Kidwelly, Carmarthen, Ffairfach and Llandovery as it continues into the Brecon Beacons through to its stage finish in Newport city centre.

Councillor Peter Hughes Griffiths, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Executive Board Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “This is a great chance for children to get creative and at the same time be involved in the celebrations. The lucky winner will have the chance to meet and greet the Welsh riders ahead of the race on the day which is a fantastic opportunity.”

The design must be supplied as a landscape drawing on A4 paper. Closing date for entries is Friday, August 3 and drawing is by post only to: Design a Jersey competition, Carmarthen Leisure Centre, Llansteffan Road, Johnstown, Carmarthen, SA31 3NQ.
