Llanelli Fairtrade launches schools competition for Fairtrade Fortnight

Llanelli Fairtrade launches schools competition for Fairtrade Fortnight

WITH Fairtrade Fortnight approaching, Llanelli and District Fairtrade have launched a collage competition for local schools. Children are being invited to collect Fairtrade food wrappers and make collages that aim to inspire people to care about the exploited and shop for Fairtrade goods.

Nia Griffith MP and Lee Waters AM have written to schools in the Llanelli constituency inviting them to take part in the competition, which closes next Wednesday 28th February. The local MP and AM will be accompanied by Llanelli Town’s Mayor Jeff Edmunds for the awarding of prizes to the best groups at the Selwyn Samuel Centre on Friday 9th March at 11.30am.

Tara Fisher, who is organising the competition, said: “We love the fact that Llanelli’s schools get involved in promoting Fairtrade. Teaching children early on about the importance of Fairtrade is vital, and this competition will hopefully provide a fun way for teachers to get them even more interested in the cause.

Fairtrade Wales, the Co-op and I are providing Fairtrade rugby balls and goody bags for the competition winners. If we all work hard to promote Fairtrade food and products, Llanelli town has a real chance of achieving official Fairtrade status, which would be a huge achievement.”

Nia Griffith MP said: “I am delighted that Tara Fisher has provided the inspiration to re-launch a Fairtrade group in Llanelli. Fairtrade Fortnight and this schools’ competition will be a great opportunity to engage people and especially young people in the Fairtrade cause.”

Lee Waters AM added:“I’d love to see Llanelli and District becoming a Fairtrade zone. Buying Fairtrade goods makes a significant difference to supporting Third World farmers and workers to become independent, to receive a secure income and to be less vulnerable to poverty.”

Fairtrade Fortnight will run from 26th February to 11th March, and Ms Fisher is organising Traidcraft market schools across the Llanelli constituency and Fairtrade coffee mornings and funfairs at local schools. Contact Tara on or 07874264230 to get involved.
