Keeping yourself healthy in pregnancy

Tips on staying healthy during pregnancy now feature in a new short video launched by the Hywel Dda Local Public Health Team.

Eating healthily and staying active during pregnancy will benefit you and your baby but can often be difficult for pregnant women juggling busy work and home life. The good news is that a few changes to your daily routine can make a big difference to you and your baby.

Speaking about the new video, Helen Jones and Beth Cossins, members of the Public Health Team who helped design it said: “We hope that the messages in the video will support women planning pregnancy and mums-to-be to stay healthy and active during pregnancy. It’s a reminder of the importance of eating a variety of different foods during pregnancy when women need the right balance of nutrients for themselves and their growing baby.

“It also dispels some of the myths around pregnancy, such as the need to consume lots of extra calories. In fact, mums-to-be only need an extra 200 calories a day in the last three months of pregnancy.

“Pregnant women are sometimes concerned about exercising, but being active when pregnant is safe and can help them adapt better to their changing shape, cope with labour and help them get back into shape after the birth. We would encourage women to keep up their normal daily physical activity such as running, yoga, dancing or walking for as long as they feel comfortable.”

The video is part of a wider campaign involving midwives and health visitors to support the health and wellbeing of pregnant women and their families.
