Gorseinon £6.9m new school opening September

THE finishing touches are being made to a £6.9m new school for Gorseinon ahead of its opening to 350 pupils in September.

The state-of-the-art development on a corner of Parc-y-Werin replaces the school’s outdated Victorian buildings and brings the infants and juniors together on one site.

The project has been jointly funded by Swansea Council and the Welsh Government through its 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme.

Local firm Andrew Scott Ltd was contracted to build the school and despite the coronavirus pandemic, it has worked safely and within government rules to ensure it can open in September.

The new school boasts 11 modern and spacious classrooms, including a nursery, linked by a huge main corridor and break-out area known as the ‘Learning Street’, together with the main hall. Outside there is a multi-use games area and all-weather pitch and these will be made available for community use outside of school hours.

The school backs on to Parc-y-Werin which has a grassed sports field and a new children’s play area that has proved extremely popular with young families since it opened last summer.

Headteacher Jason Dodd said he and his staff were thrilled with how the new build is looking and they can’t wait to see the pupils move in.

Mr. Dodd said: “Myself and my staff are thrilled to have the opportunity to share this amazing school facility with the community of Gorseinon.

“This new school gives our community the very best that education can offer.  It has been a long and sometimes difficult road to get to this point but it really has been worth it.

“I am excited about the opportunities and experiences that this building will afford and the hope and aspiration that it will give to our pupils both now and in the future.”

Swansea Council Leader Rob Stewart, who visited the new school this week to check on progress, said: “I’m delighted to see this amazing project nearing completion. This is a state-of-the-art school that is very, very, different from the old outdated accommodation of the previous buildings.

“It can accommodate up to 350 children and will be a fantastic building for the children when they return to school in September. I think they will be blown away.

“We are really pleased to have worked with local firm Andrew Scott Ltd and I would like to thank them for delivering this project alongside the council and Welsh Government for the community of Gorseinon.”
