Former Welsh Assembly minister found dead at home

Former Welsh Assembly minister found dead at home

Subject of investigation: Former Minister, Carl Sargeant

A former Labour minister in the Welsh Assembly Government has been found dead at his home in Connah’s Quay, Flintshire. It is believed that he had taken his own life. Carl Sargeant (49) was facing a party investigation into allegations about his personal conduct. He had been sacked from his post on Friday (Nov 3) following allegations about his behaviour.

Mr Sargeant who was married and had two children was found dead at his home today, Tuesday (Nov 7).

The Welsh Assembly’s business for today was cancelled as a mark of respect following his death, and meetings on Wednesday and Thursday will also not take place.

Lee Waters AM/AC took to Twitter to express his sadness at the news. He commented: “Carl was a rare Cabinet Minister to achieve office without going to University and use the levers to fight for what he believed in. A genuine guy who was in politics for the right reasons. A passionate advocate for action on gender equality and domestic violence and he got things done: Violence Against Women Act, Environment Act, Housing Act, Active Travel Act, Wellbeing of Future Generations Act.”
