Former Mayor of Llanelli Winston Lemon passes away

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Mayor of Llanelli and stalwart town and county councillor Winston Lemon who passed away recently.

We interviewed Winston many times and he always expressed his opinions articulately and with passion.

He was a champion of his local community always observing the comings and goings on his patch ensuring fair play for his constituents. Winston lived in the Seaside area of Llanelli and was often to be found walking his beloved dog along the beach area.

The Town Council said: “It is with great sadness that Llanelli Town Council notes the passing of Councillor Winston Lemon on Monday 13th December following a short illness. Councillor Lemon was a member of the Town Council from May 2008 and served with distinction as Town Mayor in 2012-13, also Chairing a number of the Town Council Committees. Councillor Lemon was also a County Councillor for the Glanymor Ward from 2008 to 2017. The Town Council passes its deepest sympathies to Winston’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

Town Mayor Councillor Michael Cranham said: “I was deeply saddened to hear of Winston’s passing, he was a tireless champion of the Glanymor Ward and will be missed.”

Cllr Gwyneth Thomas said: “Winston was a committed and hard-working councillor, who was very popular in Llanelli. Everyone knew Winston. Cllr. Alun Lenny added: Winston was a fellow member on the County Council Planning Committee for five years, until he stood down in 2017. His ready wit was legendary. His humorous stories brightened up many a dreary bus journey on committee site visits! But he was also a very astute member and an outstanding councillor.”

Deris Williams Chair of Plaid Cymru Llanelli Constituency said: “The Plaid Cymru team in Llanelli has lost a legend. He was a Welshman through and through and a non-Welsh speaker who was very proud of its language and culture.”

The leader of Carmarthenshire Labour Rob James said: “We are saddened to hear of the passing of Cllr Winston Lemon. Winston was a well known publican, running the Lemon Tree here in Lliedi for a number of years, and respected in the community. “Our thoughts are with Winston’s family during this time.”

The funeral will be held at Llanelli Crematorium at 4pm on January 4th.
