Dementia friendly Llanelli launch

AS part of the Dementia Friendly Llanelli project, Slower Shopping Tuesdays are being launched in the town on Tuesday, 7th November at 1:30pm in the St Elli Centre.

Following advice from the Alzheimer’s Society, the project which will initially run as a six-month pilot, will encourage a slower pace of shopping in Llanelli on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30-3:20pm.

As part of the pilot, participating businesses will ensure any loudspeakers are turned down or off, ensure that at least one of their tills is a slower till with signs advertising the initiative placed around the checkout and store. They will also provide chairs to customers if needed and ensure that any public toilets are made more accessible and friendly.

The project is funded by the Town Council and is supported by Ymlaen Llanelli, Llanelli Market, Y Ffwrnes, Llanelli Library, the St Elli Centre, Carmarthenshire County Council, Asda and Tesco Trostre and will be officially launched by Llanelli Deputy Mayor Cllr Roberts on Tuesday.

Free training has been provided by the Alzheimer’s Society to those businesses wishing to take part in the initiative by the as part of the Dementia Friendly Llanelli project. Llanelli already has the only indoor market in the UK that is Dementia friendly with all stallholders trained to deal with customers with the disease. Delyth Rowlands, of Llanelli Town Council who has steered the initiative said,

“We are very excited to launch this project which has been months in the making. We hope it means that more people with Dementia and other difficulties will feel comfortable coming into Llanelli to do their shopping safe in the knowledge that they can shop at their own pace.”

Ymlaen Llanelli Chair, Lesley Richards commented, “We are proud to be part of this wonderful project which encourages people into Llanelli. We already know we have a friendly town with excellent customer service. This is another initiative that emphasises our businesses’ commitment to giving people the best customer experience they possible can.”
