Nia Griffith is the Member of Parliament for Llanelli and Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Wales. She lives in Llanelli, and before becoming an MP, worked as a language teacher in local comprehensive schools and Estyn inspector.
Her previous parliamentary roles, when Labour was in Government, include being Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, working on the Climate Change Bill, the Marine Bill and flooding, and PPS to Harriet Harman MP supporting her work as Leader of the House of Commons, Minister for Women and Equalities and Acting Leader of the Labour Party
Since Labour has been in opposition, she has served as a shadow business minister, with responsibility for consumer affairs and employment, Shadow Wales Minister and Shadow Secretary of State for Defence.
Nia links her parliamentary work very directly with the interests and concerns of her constituents, and combines action through legislation and questioning ministers in Parliament with a very hands-on approach to problems in the constituency.
