Lee Waters was born and raised in the Amman Valley in Carmarthenshire. He was educated in Ammanford comprehensive school and was the first in his family to go to university, graduating with a First Class Degree in Politics from University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He worked in the US House of Representatives as an ESU Capitol Hill Scholar.
Prior to being elected to the Senedd he was Director of Wales’s leading independent think-tank, the Institute of Welsh Affairs. He also ran the green transport charity Sustrans Cymru, where he led the campaign for the world’s first Active Travel Act, and is also a former Chief Political Correspondent of ITV Wales, and BBC news producer.
In 2016 Lee was elected to the Senedd representing the Llanelli constituency and made his mark as a member of the influential Public Accounts Committee, as well as championing the digital agenda, artificial intelligence, the Foundational Economy and Active Travel. He was appointed Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport in the Welsh Government in December 2018.
