He may not be a household name here in Wales but Bont’s Brett Johns is capturing the attention of the World’s media in America as he continues his climb to the top of his sport (Cage Fighting).
Johns beat Joe Soto (18-6 MMA, 3-4 UFC), who was riding a three-fight winning streak into the bout at Friday’s TUF 26 Finale in Las Vegas.
His win with a rare submission over a solid grappler in only 30 seconds meant that Johns (15-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) became only the second UFC fighter to pull off a calf slicer submission.
The Pontarddulais cage fighter recorded the 15th win of his perfect professional record, which now includes three UFC wins.
Johns, now in the world top 15 will progress to further title attempts.
Speaking during a post fight interview Brett said: “You don’t understand what it means to be a Welshman. I am a born and bred Welsh fighter. I am a very proud Welshman and I speak the language. Without that Welsh support I wouldn’t be here. Next time I come to Vegas we will be bringing waves of us.”
Llanelli Online interviewed Brett earlier in the year when he talked about his life and his training. You can watch the video here:
