Arthur is Plaid’s candidate for Llanelli MP

Plaid’s Llanelli candidate: Mari Arthur

Plaid Cymru has selected Llanelli-raised business owner and director of sustainable development charity, Cynnal Cymru – Sustain Wales, as its candidate to fight the General Election campaign in Llanelli.

Mari Arthur, who will be standing in her home-town, was selected by her local constituency party and approved by the national party on Friday.

Ms Arthur was raised in Trimsaran and following a career in education, international marketing and business strategy, she is now the director of Cynnal Cymru – Sustain Wales – the national charity for sustainable development in Wales.

Speaking after her selection as Llanelli’s candidate for Plaid Cymru, Mari Arthur said:

“I am delighted to be standing as the Plaid Cymru candidate in my home town of Llanelli and I am privileged to have the opportunity to make a real difference to the town and its people.

“My emotional attachment to the area and my experience of running successful businesses will make me a strong voice for Llanelli in Westminster and combined with the support of our dedicated local campaigners, I am confident that we will be able to give the people of Llanelli its first ever Plaid Cymru MP, to stand up to the Tories in Westminster.

“It is clear that the Labour Party is too distracted by its own internal divisions to be able to effectively represent Llanelli in Westminster and a weak and divided opposition in Westminster does nothing but let the Tories off the hook. We need a strong voice in Westminster to defend Llanelli and defend Wales against a reckless Tory government.”

Local Plaid Cymru AM, Adam Price, added:

“Mari will be an outstanding voice for Llanelli and Wales and her wealth of experience from business and policy-making, coupled with her obvious attachment to the local area makes her the ideal person to represent Llanelli in Parliament.

“Voters have a clear choice in this election between an unchecked Tory government hell bent on privatising our NHS, spreading selective schools across the country and risking people’s jobs and wages, or a government held to account by a strong Plaid Cymru opposition, defending Wales’ interests at all times and the people of Llanelli deserve to have someone of Mari’s calibre in Westminster, making sure Llanelli stops being ignored.”
