Animals take over Llanelli town centre

Animals take over Llanelli town centre

A bold hippopotamus was standing one day
On the banks of the cool Shalimar
He gazed at the bottom, as it peacefully lay
By the light of the evening star
Away on a hilltop sat combing her hair
His fair hippopotami maid
The hippopotamus was no ignoramus
And sang her this sweet serenade

Mud, mud, glorious mud
Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood
So follow me, follow
Down to Llanelli
And there let us wallow in glorious mud

There wasn’t much mud but there were plenty of families who turned up in Llanelli town centre today, Friday (Jun 1) despite the inclement weather, to see a host of animals including an armadillo, a meerkat, a bear cat, a possum, a python, a tarantula and a giant hippopotamus.

The event organised by Ymlaen Llanelli was aimed  at bringing more people into the town centre. Throughout the week there have been activities within the St Elli Centre including arts and crafts workshops and puppet shows.

It proved to be a popular day with some enthusiastic children wanting to pet the animals whilst others were happy to keep their distance from the 3 stone python.

Mandy Jenkins of Ymlaen Llanelli said: “The rain was heavy this morning, but the skies have cleared and I’m really happy with the turnout today.

“The python was popular with some of the children as was the life sized giant puppet strolling across the streets of the town centre.”

The next big event is the 1980’s themed day on Saturday (jun 30), which will see Del Boy’s infamous yellow three wheeler in the same place as the Back to the Future Delorean and Night Rider’s Pontiac Firebird named Kit. The event starts at 12 noon in Stepney Square and followed by live music in Vaughan Street at 2pm.
