£1 parking initiative extended year-round

£1 parking initiative extended year-round

FROM this Saturday, (Feb 1)  it will cost just £1 to park in Murray Street car park all day on Saturdays for the rest of the year, thanks to an initiative from Ymlaen Llanelli Business Improvement District in conjunction with Carmarthenshire County Council.

For the last two years, the initiative has covered the Christmas season only and was seen by Ymlaen Llanelli as a way of encouraging people to shop and spend time in the town centre. However, due to the popularity of the scheme with town centre businesses and members of the public, Ymlaen Llanelli have decided to extend it for the rest of the year making it cheaper for people to access the town.

Chair of Ymlaen Llanelli, Lesley Richards, welcomes the idea: “We are delighted to be able to extend this popular initiative. We’re always looking for ways to encourage people to shop locally and we’ve found that the £1 parking has had a positive impact. The businesses love it, the public love it so it was a no-brainer to continue it all year. It will make it cheaper for people to attend our increasingly popular town events too.”

The revived initiative runs alongside the free parking scheme currently in place on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10am to 4pm in all town centre council car parks. Ymlaen Llanelli have a jam-packed events programme lined up for the year, including the return of popular festivals such as Llanelli 80s Festival, Llanelli Vintage Festival and Llanelli Food and Drink Festival.

Up first is Superhero Day on Wednesday 19th February, which will feature a host of superheroes in Stepney Square along with three Batmobile replicas from 12-3pm.
