The Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell MP is claiming that Wales has fallen foul of retribution from the Conservatives in Westminster because of the disastrous result for the Conservatives at the last general election. Leader of the Welsh Conservatives Andrew RT Davies said that the comments by the Shadow Chancellor are ’empty rhetoric’ from a Labour party on the run and accused Labour of betraying Wales on student debt and tuition fees.
When confronted with the Welsh Conservatives leader’s comments the Shadow Chancellor said: “He is talking absolute rubbish. What I find laughable is that this is coming from a party fighting like rats in a sack as to who is going to replace Theresa May. We are going to scrap student fees and do what we can to alleviate student debt.
When asked about the issue of Brexit he said. “We are all on the same page, Carwyn, Jeremy and myself, which is tariff free access to the single market. We think we can negotiate a deal with a bit of flexibility on freedom of movement. We have a government in disarray. As a result these talks are going nowhere. I am furious about what has happened on electrification. Labour did very well in Wales. This is almost like retribution for voting Labour. It was announced on the last day of Parliament. Welsh MP’s could not question the minister. I find that disgraceful. Now I am worried. There are other commitments like the lagoon that we need commitment from this government on now. There seems to be a priority for London and the South East yet in places like Wales they are tearing up the agreements. It is unacceptable.”
