THE 2019 edition of the Dyfed Primary Schools Cross Country Championships returns to a Carmarthenshire venue on the first Thursday in April.
Sponsored by Welsh Athletics and McDonalds, it will be held for the 32nd time at the United Counties Showground, Nantyci, Carmarthen on Thursday afternoon 4th April, with the first event at 5.00pm.
Last year’s event saw over 1,400 children take part and this year is set to be another bumper turnout for one of the biggest and turned out sporting events currently being held in Carmarthenshire and West Wales.
Individual winners 12 months ago were Esme Lynock (Rhys Pritchard), Rhys James (Y Dderwen), Ophelia Jenkins (Tavernspite), Steffan Thomas (Teilo Sant), Martha Brandy-Phillips (Aberaeron), Macsen Toogood (Teilo Sant), Erin Morgan (Y Dderwen) and Ifan Bowen (Y Dderwen).
Young runners of all ages and abilities will look forward to participating, following the postponement of the Carmarthenshire Primary Championships last September because of the bad weather.
There will be 8 races for the following age groups – years 3, 4, 5 and 6 (boys and girls) The Timetable is every 15 minutes and presentations to the first 10 individuals and first 3 teams in each race will be made at the end at approximately 6:55pm with special guests being invited to present.
Each event will be over a 1000m or 1200m course.
All Primary Schools in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire have received an entry form and all the fixture details. There is no qualifying standard needed and every child in Dyfed is invited to get involved.
For anyone interested in taking part, pupils must let their teacher know to enter a team. There will be an entry fee of £4 per team. If there isn’t enough for a team, individual runners are also welcome from schools and counties free of charge.
A total of twenty-four children from Years 5 and 6 will be invited to represent Dyfed at the annual cross-country match against West Glamorgan Primary Schools at Swansea University a week later.
