CARE and Repair Cymru’s Carmarthen branch have been praised by Llanelli’s Assembly Member, Lee Waters, for the work they’ve done helping a local couple.
The AM was introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Gains of Union Buildings, Llanelli, by Mark Warren, Agency Manager of the Carmarthenshire branch, after he expressed an interest in the work of the charity. Lee Waters said:
“I do receive a number of enquires from elderly constituents who are struggling with health issues but ultimately would prefer to stay in their own homes rather than move into a nursing or residential care home. But with the escalating costs of long-term care, many people end up with no choice other than to struggle on alone. I am interested in what organisations like Care and Repair can do to help people to retain their independence.”
Care and Repair Cymru, a national charity, invest in housing adaptations and improvements in order to increase older people’s personal safety, confidence, independence and well-being at home. Over the last six months, the AM followed the work carried out by Care and Repair in the home of Mr and Mrs Gains.
Lee Waters said: “When I first visited Sandra and Ian’s home in February, I could see some of the difficulties Sandra was experiencing on a daily basis. Things we take for granted, like getting in and out of the bath, were painful for her and she was dependent on her husband for help.”
At the visit, the AM heard about how the Care and Repair team were planning to renovate the bathroom to provide a new walk-in shower with easy access – creating a safer bathing environment that catered to Sandra’s mobility needs.
Mr. Waters continued: “I was keen to return when the work was complete and when I did go back I was really impressed with the professionalism of Care and Repair. The new shower room is not only functional and perfectly suited to Sandra’s needs but it also looks fantastic. It’s clearly made a huge difference to Sandra’s life.”
Mrs. Gains said: “My life is so much better with the new shower. The entire team at Care and Repair were first class – they have done me proud! And it’s great Lee has taken such an interest in the issues that I’ve experienced.”
Care and Repair’s Carmarthenshire Branch provide homeowners or private tenants over the age of 60 with a range of services including repairs, maintenance or adaptations, form-filling, welfare benefits checks and a Handyperson Scheme.
Lee Waters added: “It can be deeply distressing for many older people to even have to think about moving into residential accommodation. Care and Repair is an organisation that allows them to stay put. I cannot praise them enough.”
