A Llanelli teenager has signed a two year scholarship with Leeds United football team.

16-year-old Matthew Turner was at Elland Road, the home of Leeds last Friday (April 20) to sign the full time contract.

The former Burry Port pupil plays for Pontadawe ACAD and has represented Wales Under 16’s.

Glan Letheren who has been coaching Matthew for the past 15 months signed for Leeds United at the same age in the early 1970’s.

Matthew will be under the guidance of former Scotland international and current Leeds goalkeeping coach Neil Sullivan.

Matthew said: “Great day today. Absolutely dream come true. Now the hard work begins.

“A big thank you to everyone that has helped me over the last few years.

“None of this would have been possible without the commitment from my parents, thank you.”

His mother Lynne Turner said: “It has been overwhelming. There is a long list of people to thank from individuals who have coached Matthew in his earlier years to those who have taken him to training when we haven’t been able to.

“A special thank you to all at Pontardawe Academy where Matthew’s development has gone from strength to strength.

“Thank you to Glan Letheren of Top Catch GK for the additional hours of coaching in all weather conditions and believing in him.

“Finally to all at Leeds United for giving Matthew this huge opportunity.”

On May 19th Matthew will be receiving his Welsh Cap for representing Wales Under 16s against Gibraltar earlier this season.
