LLANELLI Town Councillor, Sion Davies, has welcomed new figures that show the employment rate in Wales has grown faster than in any other region of the UK.
The number of people in work has jumped by 18,000 from the period between April and June – and there are 59,000 more people in jobs than at the same time last year. It means the rate of joblessness in Wales is currently 3.8% – that’s lower than the UK average of 4.1%.
Conservative, Cllr Davies said: “This is yet more fantastic news on the jobs front. I’m proud to say Wales is leading the way and I am confident we will see even more growth, which is good for families and businesses here in Llanelli, and right across Wales.
The Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns, said it was “clear” the UK Government is creating conditions for economic growth and job creation in Wales.
He said: “By maximising the exporting potential of Welsh companies and encouraging inward investment, the UK government has successfully created a confidence in the Welsh economy that has facilitated the creation of jobs and prosperity”.
The figures, from the Office of National Statistics, also show the biggest rise in wages across the UK for more than a decade – with pay rising 3.2% compared with a year earlier. UK-wide, there are more people in work than ever before with the employment rate standing at 75.5% and youth employment continues to fall.
