ON Saturday (Oct 27) Pontyates RFC entertained Furnace RFC in a Division 3 West Central C clash. Prior to the match, Pontyates sat eighth in the overall standings while the visitors were fourth.
The home side had not won a match in three games whilst Furnace were on a three-match winning run.
In somewhat windy and cold conditions, Furnace took the lead through a penalty from the boot of fly-half Dafydd Green. Pontyates bounced straight back with a try from flanker Wyn Griffiths who battered his way over to score, and fly half Jonathan Cronin added the extras with the conversion.
With plenty of penalties being awarded to the two teams, kickers from both sides missed attempts at the posts in the first half. Dafydd Green it was who broke the ice and slotted one over to reduce the score to 7-6 in Pontyates’ favour.
Just before the break, Cronin added three more points to Pontyates with a penalty kick which made the half time score 10-6.
Not long after the second half whistle blew, Furnace retook the lead with centre Phil James crossing over for a try, and Green adding a further two points shortly after.
The lead switched back and forth regularly and the game was littered with penalties. The referee sin binned Furnace fullback Jamie Herbert and not long after, Pontyates scored their second try via winger Christian Belmont. The conversion was missed, leaving the score 15-13.
The second of five yellow cards appeared when the Pontyates number 8 was ordered off, and the resulting penalty was converted by Furnace’s Green. Pontyates’ fullback Ricky Evans was also yellow carded however the resulting penalty was missed.
Two more sin bins, one for both sides were given, as Furnace replacement Lloyd Thomas and Pontyates prop Neil Davies had to leave the pitch. Green added one extra penalty from the tee, to leave the score 15-19 to Furnace, before the full time whistle went.
