THE former Plaid Cymru AM Simon Thomas has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children.
The former AM was arrested by police investigating allegations of a serious offence.in July 2018
Thomas subsequently resigned from his post as AM for Mid and West Wales.
Mr Thomas who is employed by Swansea University and is a father of two children was elected in 2011.
At the time Dyfed-Powys Police issued the following statement:
“An individual from Aberystwyth has been arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images. The individual has been released on police bail for 28 days.”
In a statement Plaid Cymru Chair, Alun Ffred Jones said:
“Plaid Cymru has received Simon Thomas’s resignation as a member of the party.
“We are aware of a police investigation into allegations of a serious offence.
“Due to that ongoing investigation it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”
Following his resignation, Llanelli’s Helen Mary Jones took over the position.
The Twitter page for Simon Thomas was deleted although his page is still present on the Welsh Assembly website.
A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “We an confirm that 54-year-old Simon Thomas from Aberystwyth has today, Tuesday (Sep 18) been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children and will appear at Aberystwyth Magistrate’s Court on October 3 2018.
