THE West Wales Raiders came out fighting against an in form Doncaster side today, Sunday (May 13) at Stebonheath Park. The world’s media may have had their fill of mockery and mirth following two huge defeats for the Raiders but anyone spectating at Stebonheath today would have to acknowledge that this is a team with passion, heart and guts.
They may have been defeated again by 70 points to 18 but the new kids on the block really did put on a great show of determined play especially in the second half when Doncaster looked like they were beginning to fall apart at the seams. Ultimately the Northern clubs have the benefit of years and years of rugby league in their DNA but the Doncaster coach was the first to acknowledge that this Llanelli based side would soon be developing into a quality team.
It was a gloriously sunny day and those who paid the ticket fee would have had no complaints about what they witnessed in a fast flowing game.
Doncaster bossed the game with try after try leading by over 40 points to 0 at half time. The second half was an entirely different game for the Raiders as their defence held out and they began to make telling runs into the Doncaster half. The passing was a joy to watch and the crowd responded as the Raiders ran in their trys to salvage 18 points.
The score of 18- 70 may not be what any self respecting home side would have wished for but the Raiders will take that and be encouraged by the fact that bar for a few errors that gap could have been closed even further.
