AS the TB screenings come to an end in Llwynhendy this week, with over a 1,000 people being tested over the two days, Labour representatives sought to praise the efforts of health community to support local residents in being tested.
Cllr Rob James, Carmarthenshire Labour Leader, stated “The efforts of the health community has been tremendous over the last few days.
“Having been campaigning on this issue for a number of years, it was pleasing to see that Labour Councillor’s efforts have produced this.
“I think it’s fair to say that they were shocked by the long queues in the awful weather. Despite over a thousand people having been tested, a number of individuals have been turned away after running out of time. Our focus will now be to ensure that all residents have been unable to get tested be offered that chance in the very near future.
“Hopefully, we can eradicate this illness from Carmarthenshire and the UK as soon as possible.”
Fozia Akhtar, Councillor for Llwynhendy, said “I was pleased to see Public Health Wales and Hywel Dda Health Board screening local residents for TB this week.It’s been a long fight for me and former Councillor Theressa Bowen to get this, but I am satisfied that action is now being taken.
“I’ve had numerous phone calls from local residents requesting more sessions to meet the demand and that will be my focus going forward.”
Deryk Cundy, Councillor for Bynea, stated “The TB screening has been one of the largest of its type in the UK with over 1000 people screened in the first two days with another 6 hour session to go.
“The Public Health and Hywel Dda medical personnel have worked exceptionally hard and deserve our thanks for their dedication and patience.
“It has been confirmed by Dr Mason who is the lead on the TB Screening Programme that the Joiners Pub is not only a popular pub but also has  clean bill of health and is completely safe to have an excellent meal at with its high Hygiene rating of 5.
“All participants in the programme will be contacted in the next few weeks with the results.”
