A NEW drive-through Starbucks is coming to a supermarket car park in Llanelli.
The cafe will take up 70 parking spaces at Morrisons, Trostre Road, and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The existing Starbucks at nearby Parc Trostre will continue operating as normal.
The new venture at Morrisons car park will create 20 to 30 jobs, according to a design statement submitted on behalf of applicant and Starbucks franchisee The Magic Corporation.
Customers, it said, would mainly be Morrisons shoppers and people visiting Pemberton Retail Park, where there is already a Costa cafe.
“Accordingly, it cannot be said that the unit will draw trade away from identified centres,” said the statement.
The area of the car park identified for the new venture is said to be under-used, and planning documents said efforts had been made to identify alternative sites for the Starbucks, including 55 vacant town centre units, but that none were available or suitable.
Environment regulator Natural Resources Wales said the new cafe would be close to a former landfill site and that consideration should be given accordingly during construction, but it did not object to the application.
Carmarthenshire Council approved the application but imposed a number of conditions, including that if any ground contamination is found a report specifying measures to remediate the site must be approved in writing by the planning authority.
