Smiling through: Judge Jules (not a real judge).

Some things in life are bad. They can really make you mad. Other things just make you swear and curse. When you’re chewing on life’s gristle. Don’t grumble, give a whistle. And this’ll help things turn out for the best.

We all make mistakes, but one mistake can change your life. A friend of mine once sent a text to his wife ‘I’m having a wonderful time wish you were ‘her’.’ The rest as they say is history.

The legal profession makes a lot of money from people’s mistakes and misdemeanours, often arising from a lack of foresight in terms of protecting their assets.

You may think pre-nup agreements are for the rich seeking to protect their wads of cash. Think again. What about a second marriage where one of you may be bringing more to the table than the other and there are children to protect? Or you are starting off on a business venture and you are investing all your finances and time into it? Do you, if you are honest, in the event of the bitter demise of your relationship to your betrothed want them to have a slice of the action?

Unlike our American counterparts where pre-nups are bulletproof, in the UK it is not so clear cut. Whilst they are not legally binding in the UK a Judge is likely to take them into account and uphold them if certain safeguards have been met.

When Mr Right does eventually get down on one knee with an offer of a bit of ‘bling’ for my wedding finger I would have no hesitation in asking him to sign along the dotted line (after he has sought independent legal advice of course). I am sure my male suitor may request similar of me.

So in essence – yes Kanye we do want pre-nup, she or he may very well be a gold digger.

I cast a rain cloud of practical thinking over romance, but it’s not all doom and gloom.

In the words of Monty Python ‘Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life’.

To that end just remember there’s someone out there who has a PERMANENT tattoo of their Ex.
