Takeover at Bath: Scarlets fans

SCARLETS have moved to the top of their pool in the European Rugby Champions Cup with a 35-17 victory over Bath at the Recreation Ground.

It was superb attacking rugby by the visitors, securing the 4th try bonus point in the 51st minute. Bath did respond with two consolation tries through Matt Banahan and Zach Mercer.

The win takes the Welsh region a step closer towards the quarter-finals and in doing so dented Bath’s hopes of progression.

The visitors, being backed by thousands of vocal travelling fans, opened the scoring with a certain nominee for try of the season, finished off by side-stepping lock Tadgh Beirne.

Next to score was winger Paul Asquith, sliding in at the corner after excellent hands by the backline despite having John Barclay in the sin bin.

The home side managed to get on the scoreboard with a boot of Freddie Burns, who replaced the injured Rhys Priestland just a few minutes into the game.

Gareth Davies once again cut Bath’s defence to shreds, setting up Wales international Hadleigh Parkes for their third try to give the Scarlets a 22-3 half time lead.

In the second half, it was the same attacking flair with Rhys Patchell chipping the ball through for Scott Williams to grab the bonus point score. Fly-half Dan Jones added 15 points with the boot, kicking three penalties and three conversions.

The English side did score two tries, Banahan with an impressive arial finish and Zach Mercer driving over to make the scoreline look a little more respectable.

Jones kicked a final penalty to seal the comprehensive victory cheered on by the outstanding away Scarlets support.

Up next for the Scarlets, they welcome French giants Toulon to Parc Y Scarlets on Saturday (Jan 20) with kick off at 5:30pm in a must win clash, The victor of the match will secure first place in Pool 5 and advance to the quarter-finals.
